HANDLING SOCIAL MEDIA PRESSURES (PART 2)

Hey there,

Thank you for following up this series 'handling social media pressures', this is part two! Super excited to share with ya'll. In case you missed part 1, you can still read it here.

Yesterday I talked about a friends decision to be off media and I promised to share a screenshot of her reasons.

Here is it!

I'm sure you will get a few lessons from it and below are four other points I put together specially for you, yes you!

4) THE NUMBER OF 'ONLINE' FRIENDS YOU HAVE DOESN'T TRANSLATE TO YOUR 'TRUE' FRIENDS

It is very convenient to drop a message for someone when online, sometimes people do this just to ease boredom or mark time. Have you ever been offline for a while? Did you have your ‘friends’ call you?

A lot of people measure their friendship by those who drop beautiful comments on their post, or send DM’s regularly but until reality really hits and you have no one to run to.

I won’t deny I have met amazing people online, but to be truthful those relationships didn’t grow online, I had to make more efforts to see those relationships work.

5) OUR PROCESSES ARE ALL DIFFERENT

You probably may have heard this a thousand times, but it’s truly reality.

Our interaction with the media makes us want to ‘arrive’ and prove we have arrived. So someone goes out of her way to get clothing’s she obviously cannot afford for the glam.

If we all decide to embrace our processes, we will have less pressure to run faster than we actually should.

This is not to underplay the place of hardwork but not to also overplay the role of hardwork. People we see online and who have succeeded genuinely didn’t get there in a day.

We should be humble enough to be interested in learning from them if they share than competing with them. Do not alter your process for the media, keep increasing your value. The followership you do not have today, you will get it tomorrow without efforts.

6) WHY ARE YOU EVEN HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE?

People have different reasons for being on the media; we all know the ‘why’ gives meaning to a thing.  Some is to ‘pepper dem’, some to stalk people and know what’s happening in their lives.

I believe the original vision is to connect with people. This is a good time to reflect on your media motives. As my friend Adekunle said, ‘post to share and not to prove’.

Have genuine reasons for being on the media, stick to them and you will see how much pressure you will take off yourself.

7) TAKE A BREAK IF NEED BE

This is a hard decision and to some people an impossible one, breaks are really important in life.

It helps you think and reprogram your mind when the media has filled it with so much crap.

Your ability to take breaks off something you are used to that may also not be benefitting at the moment is so much strength and respect for your life and process.

This is in no attempt to paint the media black, the media is indeed very important, if and only if it is used wisely most especially among youth.

This period we have been on our phones more than we have ever been due to the lockdown.

I hope you find these tips helpful as you use the social media this period.
